“To Take the Northwest Passage: an Arctic evening at ArtSpring”

Please join Michael Byers and Brian Payton for a discussion of the past and present quest for a northern shipping route between Europe and Asia – and the implications for Canada and the Arctic.
Brian Payton is the author of “The Ice Passage: A True Story of Ambition, Disaster, and Endurance in the Arctic Wilderness” that recounts the final voyage of the HMS Investigator, whose wreckage was located only a few months ago in the Northwest Territories.
Michael Byers holds the Canada Research Chair in Global Politics and International Law at UBC. In recent trips to the North he has witnessed how quickly climate change is opening the Canadian Arctic to commercial shipping. His book, “Who Owns the Arctic?”, discusses the implications of a newly navigable route through the Arctic, and how to address the danger it poses to Canadian sovereignty and Arctic ecosystems.
A public discussion with these authors will be moderated by Kevin Patterson, an acclaimed island author who has practiced medicine and written about life in the North.
This event is free and open to all. It is being organized by Salt Spring Books and ArtSpring. It will begin at 7:00pm on October 3rd in the Gallery at ArtSpring.
Books by both authors will be available for sale.
Sept. 21, 2010
The Ice Passage will be published in paperback.
